Flash Builder / Flex Builder

Design View does not work since updating the Flex SDK

Created: 08/18/08 06:42 AM   Updated: 09/25/08 06:25 AM
Component/s: Design View - General
Security Level: Public (All JIRA Users )

File Attachments: 1. File TestApp.mxml (0.2 kb)

Severity: Non Functioning
Reproducibility: Every Time
Discoverability: High
Found in Version: Moxie Release (Fix Before Release)
Affected OS(s): Windows - XP
Steps to Reproduce:
Steps to reproduce:
1. Download the Flex SDK Version 3.1.0.2710.
2. Add the Flex SDK to your Flex Builder Workspace (here I use Flex Builder 3.0.1)
3. Open an existing Flex MXML component in the design view. I have opened several components that I designed in the design view before!

 Actual Results:
Flex Builder says: "This component is based on Application, which is not a visual component. Switch to source mode to edit it."
I have tried to edit components such as "Application, Panel, TitleWindows, etc." --> Flex Builder does not display the edit view of a visual component.

 Expected Results:
The component should be displayed in the design view properly!

 Workaround (if any):

Hi Maik,
Could you send us the file that you are seeing this issue? One question: did you use the same workspace that you were using in the previous build? We would recommend you to start with a clean workspace to use a new SDK. thanks!

Hi all,
I have attached a test file that does not work.
Yes, I was using the same workspace as before adding the new SDK. After I setup a new, fresh workspace the design view used to work, until I have added the new Flex SDK again.

So, after I added the SDK Version 3.1.0.2710 to Flex Builder, the Design View did not work again!

Maik Schumacher - [08/19/08 01:03 AM ]
Here are the exact versions where the issue occurs:

Eclipse 3.3.2 M20080221-1800 and
Adobe Flex Builder 3.0194161

same thing happend here, I'm using SDK 3.2.0.2827, but the file works fine in design mode if I switch back to older SDK 3.0.0

I am not able to reproduce Design View issue using FlexBuilder 301 Standalone with SDK3.1.0.2710.
- Did you add SDK from Window > Preferences > Flex > Installed SDKs using Add button?
- Could try a new workspace?

Let me know if you still reproduce this problem.

Maik Schumacher - [08/27/08 03:16 AM ]
It works with that latest FlexBuilder Version 3.0.1.205647 which just has been released in August.

However, it does not work with the FlexBuilder which has been released in February (Version 3.0194161).

Yes, I have added the SDK from Window > Preferences > Flex > Installed SDKs using the Add button.
Yes, I have also tried a new workspace.

Thanks.

Well I would not say that this issue is resolved - another person can reproduce this issue as well.... (see post from Sky Peng).

paul smith - [09/05/08 01:54 PM ]
I am equally affected by this issue, it is consistently reproducible and it doesn't help to have clean workspace or not, and seems consistent with each nightly build I try.

Currently using Eclipse Platform
Version: 3.3.1.1
Build id: M20071023-1652

with flex_sdk_3.2.0.3108

and has been equally a problem with every build of the flex SDK for flash player 10 that I've tried.

So unless a workaround that works can be posted can I suggest that this should not be marked as "resolved" ?

NN - [09/08/08 02:59 AM ]
come on how this can be resolved???

QA you have to reopen the issue for previous version of Flex builder 3.0 (build 3.0.194161) which give me same error with new workspace (for Flex SDK 3.1). I have wasted enough time to create new workspace and get everything in place only to see same error. But if you revert back to Flex SDK 3.0 everything works right away (without doing anything else)

How come it will break view mode by changing sdk version?

Is it mention somewhere that Flex SDK 3.1.0 will work with Flex Builder 3.0.1. If that is true you are forcing people to upgrade just to use new SDK which is not right.

anyways we need some work around apart from that workspace excuse...

Shantanu - [09/08/08 04:51 AM ]
Yup! Facing the same issue! How is this resolved w/o explanation?

Yukari Machiyama - [09/08/08 04:17 PM ]
I finally reproduced the issue with FlexBuilder 3 with SDK3.1. What we misunderstood is FlexBuilder version. The bug has been reported against FB3.0.1 so we assumed this is the updater version released this summer because it's called Flex Builder 3.0.1.

Is it possible for you all to run updater that can be found at http://www.adobe.com/support/flex/downloads_updaters.html? Let us know if updating resolves the issue.

Thank you so much!

Yukari Machiyama - [09/08/08 04:23 PM ]
Sending to IRB. If users need to upgrade to FB3.0.1, can we add notes to the SDK download page? (SDK download page refers to only Flex Builder 3 so people assume Moxie would work with newer SDK builds.)

paul smith - [09/08/08 04:48 PM ]
One complicating factor - I am using Flex 3 plugin for Eclipse 3.3 (see above) as my primary development environment. I'll be able to test this tomorrow, hopefully - but I'd prefer not to have to "downgrade" to FB3 to make this work.

NN - [09/08/08 10:06 PM ]
yeah after using updater Flex Builder version 3.0 (build 3.0.1..205547) with SDK 3.1.0 is working after creating new workspace not with existing workspace of previous version of flex builder.

I was using Eclipse plugin but after this mess separate out the environment where flex builder for flex work and Eclipse for java.

man this has cost at least 4-5 hours or day to resolve..

1. Get updater for flex builder 3.0.1 --> installed it
2. Start Flex builder after updating and select SDK 3.1.0
3. Make sure you have new workspace and get the project from older workspace or it is your choice how you get the project into new workspace
4. It should work for sure

Cheers

Kazue Watanabe - [09/09/08 01:13 PM ]
This doesn't reproduce in 3.0.1. It looks like the users didn't know they need to upgrade to 3.0.1 when they use SDK3.1. Another bug will be filed for asking update of the SDK download webpage.

NN - [09/09/08 06:43 PM ]
So to use SDK 3.1.0 you need to upgrade flex builder from previous version to 3.0.1??

one should put somewhere in red color so people can notice

paul smith - [09/10/08 01:53 AM ]
Does this also mean that development with SDK/plugin (eg using Eclipse 3.3.x and the Flex plugin) is NOT supported for these new SDK versions? Since the problem exists there too and the "update to FB 3.0.1" workaround is not available in that context?

That should be made VERY clear on the SDK download pages etc.

craig - [09/25/08 06:25 AM ]
I'm running Eclipse 3.4 with Flex Builder 3.0.0. I also ran into this issue where it wouldn't let me edit in deisgn mode anymore ( I had updated my SDK to 3.1.0.2710).

So, I created a new workspace in Eclipse and it worked fine.
